The name De Zeekoe, is derived for the Dutch name for the farm, Zeekoegat, which literally means “hippo waterhole” over a century ago, these odd-looking, water-loving creatures used to frequent the riverbed that still runs through the farm to this very day. Situated only 7km outside Oudtshoorn, in the Garden Route’s Klein Karoo, surrounded by the famous Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains, is one of the world’s 17 “hot spots” with 3 overlapping flower zones. De Zeekoe's unique charm & extraordinary activities attract guests of a different kind. People from all walks of life visit this stylish lucern farm in search of a unique experience. Guests can choose between various accommodation types, ranging from stylish rooms at the main house to rustic waterfront chalets & luxurious cottages. The idyllic setting indeed has something to offer for everyone – from the daring adventure-seekers to those who just yearn for a quiet getaway. This hidden gem has spectacular views with 168 bird species and not the “big 5” but the “shy 5”. De Zeekoe's old colonial homestead is over 150 years old. Restored to its former splendor, its tastefully decorated luxury rooms all open onto cool verandas, from where guests can enjoy a spectacular view of the lush indigenous garden, beyond which the vast planes of the Karoo stretch all the way to the stunning Outeniqua and Swartberg mountain ranges that tower in the distance. Each room is elegantly decorated in warm hues. Soft textures add a personal touch. All rooms are equipped with all the necessary luxuries. The fully equipped standard rooms are ideal for single occupants or a one night's stay over on a business trip. These basic rooms have a view from both sides - riverbed and mountain. Only 5 minutes drive from the main house, you will find our 4 unique waterfront cabins. They are built from alien poplar wood that we removed to make way for endemic brush and offer breathtaking views over the lake with abundant birdlife with 162 recorded species and is a malaria-free area. The cabins are fully equipped, except for television. De Zeekoe's delicious dinners are complimented by its comprehensive local wine list, supplied from our own wine cellar. Wine tastings are available on request. Enjoy gathering around big fires in the evenings, before sitting down to your evening meal.
